New Developments at The Kauri Museum
There are always new developments at The Kauri Museum, meaning there is always something new to see! Our Northland heritage museum in Matakohe is the perfect Northland attraction for groups of friends and family.
The Brooke Sailing Collection
The Brooke Sailing Collection features an exhibition of classic yacht models, including an original kauri Frostbite sailing dinghy which has been entrusted to the museum by the Brooke Family. This collection of model Logan kauri yachts made and donated by Don Brooke, highlights the fact that kauri was the king of timbers for boat building. The classic yacht models donated to the Northland Kauri Museum include Rawhiti, Iorangi, Sunbeam, Rainbow, Moana, Waitangi and half models of Ariki and Nga Toa.
New Pioneer Display
In the New Pioneer Display, the story of our pioneer settlers and their interaction with the local Maori people will be told. Why did the settlers leave England and come to the Matakohe area? Would they have survived without the help of the Maori people?
Sports of Bushmen - The Axe and Saw
The sports that were developed by the early Northland bushmen will be shown using life-like mannequins. Since the 1880s, bushmen have competed with each other using axes or saws. Today these are international competitions.
